Gothic Arches x 6, Brickwork

Gothic arch (1 of 6) brickwork Project one, Elephant & Castle, South London.

A project we undertook in July 2012, a post Victorian redundant water tower on the grounds of the old hospital which stood untouched for over 40 years, was bought privately to covert into a single unique home for the occupants. The exterior of the building was in desperate need of attention and repair. We at Essex Brickwork and Repointing had the responsibility of dismantling 6 damaged , and in some cases dangerous, gothic style arches. Without the original architectural drawings and plans we had to make sure we re-built them exactly like the original. By salvaging as many bricks as possible we were able to re-build each individual arch exactly how it was originally built nearly one hundred years ago, and also used lime mortar to repoint them to match the original pointing. (This project was featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs 100th episode, sep.2012, with interview with our bricklayer James).
